RCSDASSK: What It Really Means in Your Logs

I’ve seen this panic before. You open Event Viewer. You see RCSDASSK.

Your heart drops. Is it malware? A breach?

A broken domain controller?

It’s not.

Rcsdassk is a diagnostic tag. Not an error code. Microsoft’s LSASS drops it into Kerberos pre-auth failures.

That’s all. Nothing more. Nothing less.

You won’t find “RCSDASSK” as its own event. It hides inside descriptions. Like in Event ID 4771 (Kerberos pre-authentication failed) or 4625 (failed logon).

Also check 4768 (TGT request) and 5156 (Windows Firewall blocked connection). Those are the usual suspects.

Here’s what you’ll actually see:

TargetUserName: jdoe

ServiceName: krbtgt/CONTOSO.LOCAL

Status: 0x19 (ERRORLOGONFAILURE)

And buried in the message: RCSDASSK.

That 0x19 is the real problem. RCSDASSK just tells you how LSASS tried (and) failed. To validate the ticket.

Patch your servers. Update time sync. Check password policies.

Then stop blaming RCSDASSK.

It’s not malware. It’s noise. Honest noise.

Error Rcsdassk isn’t a thing you fix. It’s a clue you read wrong.

Don’t waste hours hunting ghosts. Start with time skew or expired passwords instead.

Why Your Domain Join Keeps Failing: Root Causes You Can Actually

I’ve seen this error a dozen times before lunch.

It’s not magic. It’s misconfiguration.

And Error Rcsdassk usually points to one of four things (no) guessing required.

First: clock skew. If your machine is more than five minutes off from the domain controller, Kerberos says “nope.”

Run w32tm /query /status in PowerShell. Look at “Source” and “Last Successful Sync.”

If it’s blank or hours old?

That’s your problem. (Yes, time sync still breaks things in 2024.)

Second: dead machine account passwords. They rotate every 30 days by default. Yours might be expired.

Reset it with netdom resetpwd /server: /userd: /passwordd:*. Then verify with nltest /sc_query: (success) means “Status = 0”.

Third: Kerberos encryption types gone rogue. RC4 disabled? Good.

But if AES isn’t enabled as fallback, you’re locked out. Check HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\Kerberos\Parameters. Default safe values: SupportedEncryptionTypes = 2147483647.

Fourth: DNS can’t find the domain controller. Try nslookup -type=SRV ldap.tcp.dc._msdcs.yourdomain.com. You need at least one record with port 389 and a valid DC hostname.

Oh (if) Event ID 4771 shows “0x18”, skip the clock check. Go straight to encryption types. That code means “pre-authentication failed.” Not time.

Not DNS. Encryption.

Fix one. Test. Move on.

Don’t shotgun all four at once.

Fixing Error Rcsdassk: A Real Admin’s Workflow

I run this exact sequence every time I see Rcsdassk pop up in logs.

First (I) do not reboot. Not yet. I type klist purge and gpupdate /force on the affected box.

Right then. You’d be shocked how many people skip this and jump straight to registry edits.

Then I let Kerberos logging. Registry path: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\Kerberos\Parameters. Add LogLevel as DWORD 1.

Reboot? No (just) restart the KDC service or wait for next logon.

Now reproduce the issue. Grab kdcsvc.log. Look for timestamps that line up with the failure.

Check client IP. Check flags like 0x40000000 (forwardable) or 0x80000000 (renewable) (those) often trigger Rcsdassk.

I wrote a PowerShell script that checks all four root causes in order. It runs klist, validates Group Policy status, scans Kerberos registry keys, and confirms LSASS protections are intact. Outputs PASS/FAIL.

And tells you exactly what to fix.

Never disable LSASS protections. Never edit Kerberos parameters in prod first. Test in staging.

Or better. Test on your own laptop before touching anything live.

Here’s one thing nobody tells you: gpupdate /force doesn’t always apply Kerberos policy changes. You need /boot or a reboot. Yes.
